Proper Card Care

The average life expectancy of an id+ card is 4-5 years; therefore, it is important to take good care of your card.  Storing your id+ card in a protective card case will lessen the risk of damage.

The id+ Office will replace, at no charge, any worn or non-functioning id+ card that exhibits normal wear and tear.  Normal wear and tear is defined as any damage that may be caused by swiping the id+ card through authorized equipment.

Examples include:

- Horizontal wear on the magnetic stripe

- Clean horizontal break of the card (must have both pieces)

The id+ Office will charge a replacement fee for non-functioning id+ cards that are determined to be caused by improper care and handling.

Examples include:

- Vertical/horizontal gouges or scratches on magnetic stripe

- Vertical wear on the magnetic stripe

- Bent or curling cards

- Vertical break of card or ragged vertical/horizontal break

- Abnormal marks including teeth marks

- Equipment damage (ie...washer/dryer)

NOTE: the above criteria were established to be used as a general guideline and are not all-inclusive.

Per University policy AD24, tampering (labels/stickers, burning/branding, or punching holes) with id+ cards and/or making color reproductions is prohibited. id+ cards presented that are in violation of this policy will automatically be assessed the replacement fee regardless of the overall condition of the card.

Replacement fee is assessed for lost or stolen id+ cards.

Please DO NOT:

  • mark or bend your card;
  • punch holes in your card;
  • scratch the magnetic strip on your card;
  • use your card as an ice scraper;
  • allow your card to rub against the raised lettering of other cards
